Research Interests

My research interests center on strengths-based, contextually relevant, and culturally accessible models of mental health care for youth and families of color living in urban poverty. Specifically, I am interested in (1) leveraging community stakeholder research partnerships to promote mental health care; (2) understanding racial/ethnic minority health/educational disparities; and (3) identifying contextual and cultural protective factors among adolescents experiencing adversities. I am co-mentored by Drs. Frazier and Stephens.

CONSIDERING CULTURE AND CONTEXT: A MIXED-METHODS APPROACH TO EXAMINING ADOLESCENT ENGAGEMENT AND PARENT SATISFACTION IN URBAN OUT-OF-SCHOOL-TIME PROGRAMS

Dissertation funded via a NIMH R36 Dissertation grant

Positive future orientation (optimism about education, employment, relationships) can help to facilitate positive health and education trajectories for adolescents of color in communities of poverty and violence. Out-of-school-time community programs, such as after-school programs, can promote positive future orientation, but we know little about cultural and contextual influences on youth enrollment and engagement. I am inviting adolescents and caregivers in partnering programs to answer survey and focus group questions about program-level culture/context (e.g., cultural respect), family engagement and satisfaction, and family-level culture/context (e.g., ethnic identity). I will examine associations that may inform program development and improve the quality and reach of programs for vulnerable youth and families of color.
